Working as a freelance artist means a number of projects never make it out into the world. Here’s a look at a great gig that got away. I was hired in 2008 to do a cover illustration for the first edition of Matt Taibbi’s The Great Derangement, an author I was proud to be associated with. The text had already been laid out by a designer and I needed to come up with something recognizable that would instantly relay that America had gone mad. As sometimes happens, the publisher decided to “go in a different direction” and that was that. These are the three sketches I came up with.
