Yeah, nobody does anything to help society…. except all those damn non-profits like Feeding America, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Red Cross, Salvation Army, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Goodwill, Boys & Girls Club of America, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity…. oh, and the soldiers in the US military… the National Guard… Police Officers… Firemen… you know. Those guys.

This wasn’t simply a “media spectacle.” You obviously didn’t watch the news about it. This was an experiment that tests the ability for humans to reenter the earth from possible failed space mission. For example, we now know that it is possible for astronauts to evacuate the ISS without the aid of a space craft, but more EXPERIMENTATION is needed (not necessarily media spectacles).

The problem is, government-sponsored science projects are designed by scientists and intended to better the well-bing of its citizens, and the results belong to the public who paid for them.
Corporate-sponsored science projects are designed by PR people and intended solely to promote their prducts, and the results belong to the corporation.

I don’t understand how you can consider this or the other stunts Red Bull spnsors as “philanthropic”.

is absolutely no need whatsoever for anyone to ever try that other than
to create a media spectacle”, lets see here, you could remove that first portion and replace it with various things such as “Evil Kneival jumped the snake river in a rocket” or “two uppity young men by the name of Wright put on a spectacle for viewers today at kittyhawk”. Seriously? Your going to belittle a guy for having an ambitious goal in the name of adventure, of simpler put, because he can? You go ahead and relax in your little corner coffee shop with your mediocre life and make fun of the the people that actually seek something challenging in their lives. By challenging I mean something other than a blog…

Science is one of the least corporate sponsored business investments made. NASA IS a corporation. They are sponsored by the government in the same way as a major oil company would be. Even less supported by investors, are space initiative science research projects. There were no RED BULLS back in the “good old days”, but I don’t think that demerits what they did. I think that companies like Red Bull and Virgin Galactic are brilliant and much more relevant now, than NASA actually could be today. For my generation at least, my expectations for NASA have been underwhelmed for the past decade. However, the idea that private companies are able to gather the means themselves with an effort to push human limitations, and explore new boundaries for the average man, I think is inspiring. I think this is why so many people have reacted as strongly as they have to the recent strato-jump made by Baumgartner. I don’t think it has anything to do with their beverages. I think if you look into the other philanthropic projects that Red Bull take on, you will find they are equally a part of human well being and improvement, as well as company image. Not a shame at all.
