On Sunday Felix Baumgartner became the first person to skydive to earth from the stratosphere while covered in Red Bull logos. Watching the multiple teams of people it took to coordinate this jump, I was left wondering if all this effort was really necessary for one Extreme Bro to go skydiving. Baumgartner broke the sound barrier with his body, which is pretty crazy, but the reason he’s the first person to do that is because there is absolutely no need whatsoever for anyone to ever try that other than to create a media spectacle. There was apparently a slew of scientific data gleaned from this that can be put to good use in the event that we ever have a space program again or, more probably, rich people want to jump out of spaceships for fun.
This Thursday in Portland I’ll be doing a live reading of comics and hate mail for Comics Underground. Lots of other great creators will be performing as well, including
Jeff Parker, Ben Dewey, Leia Weathington, Erika Moen, Lucy Bellwood. I’ll be mostly reading comics that recount the crazy year in lady-hating legislating with Frayn Masters reprising her role as the voice of the Avenging Uterus.
Thursday, October 18 at the Jack London Bar (529 SW 4th, Portland). 8 pm. $3 cover.
