Last week was the fifth anniversary of the publication on the Danish Muhammad cartoons. Tom Spurgeon posted some good thoughts
over at Comics Reporter. I don't have much to add other than emphasizing the fact that 139 people died in the ensuing riots. Whether it's these cartoons or the recent Koran burning stunt, these controversies usually are abstract debates between free speech purists (a group I consider myself to be a part of), anti-Islamic conservatives and their political rivals. In other parts of the world--brown parts--people die.
