I think I figured it out...

JR Rose is drawing editorial cartoons for a publication that targets 4-8 year olds. There's no other explanation.

God I'm glad the newspaper told me that the weather was cold, otherwise I wouldn't have got it.

Wow. It's a good thing he put that little newspaper machine there with the big headline, otherwise I'd never have known the cartoon was about the goddamn weather.

Does this sort of thing eventually pass a Hackishness Event Horizon beyond which it's indistinguishable from those editorial cartoons on The Onion?

The best part is he can reuse this strip every time there's a cold snap. If he's feeling industrious, he can invert the image every other year.

Even a 4-year-old knows you don't "borrow" a coat. That's akin to saying "I think we both agree that you deserve to be colder than me."
